If left untreated, partial or full tooth loss may not only affect your self-confidence, but can also increase the risk of other health and nutritional problems. Dentures are removable prosthetic appliances that replace missing teeth. Dentures are carefully crafted to resemble the natural look of your teeth and match your smile’s appearance.
Types of Dentures
Full dentures are worn by patients whose teeth are missing in either the top or bottom arch. These dentures cover the entire upper or lower jaw. There are three types of full dentures:
- Conventional dentures: We recommend conventional dentures for patients with completely healed gums. They can be put in place eight weeks after teeth extraction. Recovery time varies for each person, and Drs. Catherine Young or Jared Young will decide the exact time for the denture installation. The patient should maintain their dental hygiene habits and healthy diet during this time to assist with the healing process.
- Immediate dentures: To prevent any discomfort as a result of living without teeth, immediate dentures are a great option. Patients are able to wear them right after the tooth is removed. However, since the jaw continuously adapts during the healing process, regular adjustments will need to be made. We recommend that immediate dentures be worn as a temporary treatment until the patient is able to wear conventional dentures.
- Overdentures: We aim to save as much as we can of your natural teeth, regardless of their condition because they help the jawbone stay healthy and provide support to your dentures. The overdenture is used to accommodate existing teeth.
Partial dentures are offered as well and used when a few natural teeth are still in place. Partial dentures are appropriate for patients who need dentures on a certain part of their mouth. Patients are able to remove partial dentures for extra comfort. These are fitted to existing teeth or implants with precision attachments.
